An Amazing Day By: Fernando Svagusa, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2009
In the evening of the 10th of December, 2009, I was working in my workshop when my dad and I saw a hummingbird flying inside the shop. This happens from time to time with bigger birds, sparrows, sorsales, jilgueros, etc. We think this happens because of the light that comes through the roof of the workshop. We put lot of thin plastic up there instead of the aluminum or zinc to improve illumination. When I saw it for the first time, it kept flying in a small area. I think it could need some food considering this little marvel needs a lot of energy to keep flying. So I put a bit of sugar and water mixed in 2 coke caps (that was all I had at the time) but it didn't come even close.
When we realized it didn't know the way out we opened all the doors, which are huge, with the hope it can see more light, trees, and plants, and fly away. Suddenly we lost it and think it may have gone.
Sometime later I found it on the floor. It was sitting at a side of a table that I was working on, close to the wall. It was very quiet and was easy to get with my hands without hurting it. Then I offer the water and sugar to it. First it didn't do anything and wanted to leave. But it was so very tired. Then I could see it move its tongue and start drinking. After a while it looks much better and I leave it on the grass.
First it didn't move. And then suddenly it spread its wings and is flying again. It fly's 10 feet around me and lands on my knee. I give it more water and then it fly's again about the same distance and landed on my head. It stayed there for a full 2 minutes. It left and I lost it in the trees
