Hummingbird Stories
Bathing Beauty
Catching the early summer sun to water some plants there was a slight breeze with no clouds in the sky. I didn’t have my sprayer nozzle attached to the hose so I used my thumb to spray. Being on the side of the house there was some shade from the Crepe Myrtle bushes so that helped keep me cool. I also have Rose of Sharon bushes as they look like little Hibiscus plants which hummingbirds like. They too are next to the house where I am watering. With the early morning sunrays, and a light wind blowing, there was almost a mystical capture of the world.
I wasn’t really paying a lot of attention until a green glimmering caught my eye in the spray of the water. There before my eyes was a small female Black Chin Hummingbird taking a bath. I have heard they will use a spray to take a bath. I was so excited! Of course I didn’t have a camera around to take a picture. This precious little bird was in the spray at least a couple of minutes. I know they don’t bathe in a typical birdbath unless there is a fountain to use.
My neighbor’s chain link fence was there close by, and she sat on the fence preening her feathers after she bathed. How exciting to actually see such a beautiful tiny creature take a bath in my spray. She flew out of the fence again and played in the spray for a little longer. Then she flew up into the Crepe Myrtle bush for a minute. Shortly after that, she flew off and I haven’t had that occasion to have her back when watering. Hummingbirds share a magical view of their world with their flight patterns. I loved the experience of having such a beauty come and bathe in my water that day. Come back “beauty” and take a bath any time!
