Hummingbird Stories

The Baby Hummingbird

Well the story is that we had a wind chime hanging on the patio and it was broken, all the chimes were gone, so my wife asked me to take it down.

Then she went for a closer look and a humming bird had built its nest in the wire and hanger of the old wind chime.

So taking it down was not an option now…

We could see the nest from our breakfast nook and we noticed the mother bird sat there, she did not mind us opening the patio sliding door etc…We came and went and kept a close eye on the nest.

She never seemed to move my wife was worried she would die of starvation, but we never touched the nest for nearly three weeks then we saw she had left and two tiny beaks were poking out of the top of the nest.

After a few days we were awakened one morning to a real “clatter” there was a crow making a real “din” in the back yard so I got up and went to look. I saw it sat on a railing in the rear yard and chased it off.

After examining the humming bird nest, I had to tell my wife was who was distraught the news…The nest was half shredded and the little chicks were gone. This was a sad day.

Two days later my wife was watering and weeding a planter tub on the patio close to where the humming bird nest had been hanging and she found a little shivering baby bird, in the planter all wet.

We took a spoon and some sugar and water and held it close to the chick it responded and drank a little.

I then contacted World of Humming Birds and they were kind enough to advise us…

We found a local agency called ‘Project Wildlife’ in Carlsbad CA they said to put the chick in a cardboard box with some Kleenex and take it to them.

My wife did so right next day and when we checked on “our little friend” he was doing well and had some “buddies” so at least one of the chicks survived.

Do you have a story you would like to share? If so, write it up in a story format with your name and where you live and we can add it to the site so the rest of the World of Hummingbird .com members can enjoy as well.
