Hummingbird Stories

A Feathered Friend.
By Carol, 2009

Aug. 30, 2009, Missouri.

Today, as I was talking on the phone to my daughter, I heard a buzzing sound, actually I thought it sounded just like a big horse fly, they do hang around the calves in the summer, but this was in the house. I got out of my chair to check out the noise, I new it was coming from the sky light in the kitchen. Well, I looked up, expecting a bumble bee or a horse fly the size of a horse, but surprise, it was a hummingbird. I hung up the phone, and got a fishing net that I use to catch up baby chicks when I move them to different cages, but the little rascal just flew right thru the diamond shaped holes. Next, I tried a smaller version, but realized that the net was more of a danger to her, I was afraid I would hit her with the hard edges. The only way was to get on a chair and use my hands.

The poor thing was terribly panicked, but I quickly caught her, and it felt as tho I had nothing in my hand at all. The hummer seemed about to pass out, so putting her in my turned up t-shirt, (where many eggs and baby chicks have been carried) I fed her some sugar water, to help revive her, I did this outside, in case she felt up to flying, there wouldnt be anything to inhibit her. She drank a bit, after she realized what I was pushing her beak into, then a flash of irridecent green, and she was gone.

But how had she gotten in to begin with? I noticed that the back door had been standing open, it had been an unseasonably cool day today, and right inside the door was a black swimsuit with big pink flowers printed on it, hanging on a hook. putting 2and 2 togeather, the bird was flying past, saw the brightly colored suit, flew thru the door to it, and then couldnt find her way back out.

Well, I am always happy to help out a feathered friend.
