Potpourri Box - Hummingbird

Beautiful potpourri box handcrafted from New Zealand Rimu native timber. Hummingbird design lid made from pewter. Rimu or also known as Red Pine is a tree that usually grows to a height of between 20 and 35 meters but sometimes even 50 meters. The straight trunk is up to 1.5 meters through and the bark is dark brown with a flaking texture. Rimu is one of the best known species in New Zealand and is an excellent timber tree. Heart Rimu is one of the most beautifully figured woods and is very often used in quality furniture. The Rimu tree is found in forests throughout New Zealand. Hummingbirds are small birds in the family Trochilidae. They are distingushed by their ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 15 to 80 times per second (depending on the size of the bird). They are named for the characteristic hum made by their wings and are the only birds that can deliberately fly backwards. Hummingbirds are attracted to many flowering plants—shrimp plants fuchsias many penstemons—especially those with red flowers. They feed on the nectar of these plants and are important pollinators especially of deep-throated flowers. Most species of hummingbird also take insects especially when feeding young. The Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is the smallest bird in the world weighing 1.8 g. A typical North American hummingbird the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) weighs approximately 3 g and has a length of 7.6 cm (3 inches).

Wood and leather jewelry box, 'Happy Hummingbird'

A hummingbird hovers amid flowers to feast on their sweet nectar. Portrayed in burnished tooled leather, the graceful images adorn a diminutive chest of drawers for keepsakes and treasures. "Hummingbirds abound where I come from," says Francisco Mendoza in Guatemala. "It is a pleasant little creature that inspires many artistic forms, including my wood art and the embroidered huipiles (tunics) worn by the women of my village." Mendoza crafts a magnificent puzzle box that doubles as a decorative box. The main body is carved from mahogany, and ebony is used to shape the flower and leaf. Mendoza uses granadillo wood for the stem of the flower, and guachipilin wood for the hummingbird's beak as well as for the center of the flower.
